Done!

I tried on the suffragette evening dress and decided against basting the skirt and bodice together. It seemed like it would work unbasted, but I pinned it anyway. Then the pins came out a little wonky, and I decided it would be fine.

I needed another tuck in the petticoat. After doing the first five nicely, I did the world's sloppiest tuck above the ruffle. I'm sure it's not the first petticoat to have a giant sloppy tuck.

Then I tried the suffragette day skirt on over the petticoat to see if it would work, and figured I may as well mark the new closures, so those are done. I moved the snap, but just added extra bars instead of moving them.

So, I think everything that has to be done is done. I still want a new hat, but...

Before and After!

Before and after--no tucks and tucks!

I hate making tucks, but as I was doing it, I just reminded myself that adding tucks to a petticoat is much faster than making a new petticoat. And they're pretty!

I think this is short enough to wear with the suffragette evening dress now. And it should be a good length for the day skirt too, so I can pack less. The petticoat and a corset cover is much better for packing than a petticoat and a princess slip! And my new goal is to pack as little as possible so I can take as much extra stash fabric as possible...

Now, closures on the suffragette evening skirt...

Done!

The beach pajamas are done! I even secured the threads on the ends of the darts. I should probably whip the seam allowances, but eh.

On to more little things! Except for wanting another spring corset (with different straps), everything now is small.

I am like….90% sure I’m going camping this Friday.

It depends a bit on the weather, but I’m mostly packed, I’ve cooked food that’s currently waiting in the freezer, and I have acquired the third Diane Mott Davidson book to read.

The plan is to leave work early, catch the train to the campground, camp overnight, and in the morning hike out to a different train station further down the line, about a seven-mile trek, to do a longer endurance test than last weekend’s. Then I’ll catch the train home around noon on Saturday.

If something goes wrong, I can catch an evening train home on Friday until eight o’clock, or starting in the morning at 5:30, with little to no exertion. It’s pretty low-risk and I’m well stocked. I don’t have a sleeping pad, but my backpack has a partial one built-in, and I have one arriving tomorrow (though it might be too bulky, we’ll see). And honestly in this heat, I might just sleep on top of my sleeping bag in any case.

Worst case scenario, the campground has heated, lockable shower cubicles with nice big floors. I’ve slept on worse.

Caaaaaaamping! *jazz hands*

I wasted the entire night trying to get the turban for the beaded dress to work. To make myself feel better (or something) I tried wrapping the shawl that I've used as a turban before and wrapped it cutely in about a minute. I think trying to to it in voile or voile and silk was the issue. Oh well.

So I decided to go turbanless (I don't want the faux sequined shawl for this) and actually tried to do my hair. I never practice hair. But I found out that my tiny curling iron will curl my hair from straight, which is good. I may or may not wrap the strip of fabric I hemmed for the bird dress around my head. We will see.

The plan had been to make the pants for the beach pajamas. And fix the straps. I moved them a tiny bit after checking them and didn't check them again. Never a good plan!

But it's earlyish. I still may do something...

And home again!

The Jane Austen Festival was wonderful. As usual, no recap, but it was so nice to see so many people! And Game of Thrones! And amazing food (vegetarian bahn mi and won ton soup, a whole vegetarian Chinese restaurant, and Ethiopian in addition to very yummy hummus filled picnics)! And I finished the bodice for the beach pajamas! Also, I still have a Snorlax in the Locust Grove gym :)

The trip home continued my streak of good travel luck--not only was [personal profile] jennil at the airport (it was so nice to have more time to catch up! It's been so long!) my flight got in half an hour early!

I've even unpacked and fixed the handle on my suitcase--the screw in the handle came out. It was easy--unzip the lining, find the missing bolt, and screw it back in. I also tightened the other screws since they weren't sticking out of the backs of the bolts.

Anyway, I'm very much in the mood to sew, but I think I only have machine sewing. But I might make the beach pajamas belt by hand to avoid turning a tube. I hate turning tubes more than just about anything sewing wise...

I decided to wear my red embroidered Regency this weekend. It was good to wear an old dress!

And the spring stays are my favorite ever. I didn't have to pin the dress down!

A short post because it's almost time for Game of Thrones. Aaaaaaa....

I'm a horrible picture taker...

The Jane Austen Festival starts tomorrow! After an eventless trip, no delays, no unplanned shuttle buses, I'm ready. And Aubry and I have a fully stocked room of food too, of course. And went to a vegetarian restaurant.

Well, except for ironing. Ironing is definitely not ready...

I finished the suffragette embroidery. All that's left is the waist closure (marked) and basting it to the bodice.

The beach pajamas are also well underway. I have a tiny bit--the neckband to be exact--more before the bodice is just handwork. Amazingly, the pattern fit straight from the envelope. I just lengthened the hem a tiny bit. Hopefully I'll get to that in a bit :)

My parents signed me up for Nextdoor, which is like some kind of community-based mini facebook, and I am signed up in their neighborhood, which is (as we have established) The Boondocks.

I don’t mind belonging to their Nextdoor, it means that I will be kept abreast of local news, but also the local news is hilarious.

The latest messages concern a HEATED DISCUSSION about hoof trimming because someone posted asking if anyone knows a farrier who will trim miniature horse hooves, which apparently most farriers have some kind of BASELESS PREJUDICE against according to this poster. Battle lines are quickly being drawn between the various camps including:

Miniature horses don’t need hoof maintenance the way regular horses do
Miniature horses ABSOLUTELY need hoof maintenance you monsters
Farriers who won’t do miniature horse hooves ain’t shit
Farriers who won’t do miniature horse hooves have their reasons
Miniature horses are some bullshit
Everybody shut up about miniature horses
I Have A Miniature Horse For Sale

I can’t wait to see who wins. I suspect it will be me.

I probably could be done with it now, it just needs skirt closures and the skirt basted to the dress, but I knew I wanted beetle wing embroidery, so I started beetle wing embroidery. I was going to do a scrolly thing with smooth purl, but given that I've never done that before and I'd have to do it on the bodice itself, not in a hoop, I decided just spangles and beetle wings. Those I know don't have to have hoops! My two inch sample of sewing the purl down came out fine though :)

I just got home and the apartment REEKS of burnt toast. Which is weird since a) nothing is on fire (I checked), b) I haven’t even MADE toast in like a week, c) it didn’t smell like that this morning when I got home from running, and d) the smell is most intense when standing on my welcome mat just inside the door.

I think Ghost is mad at me. They often express themselves with smells near the doorway. But I haven’t even done anything! The designated Ghost Drawer in the card catalogue shelf (under G, for Ghost) is open and everything, I checked.

I cannot order you a pizza tonight, Ghost, I already have grocery delivery coming and I don’t want the Domino’s guy and the Peapod guy to make it awkward. We’ll have pizza on Thursday.

The suffragette evening dress is so close to being done! All that's left is to sew the second half of the waistband, closures, and cover the waistband with chiffon. I decided to leave off the train. I really liked the skirt as is, and holding the chiffon up as a train didn't really make me want the train. I was already worried about the weight of it. So, with so little time to go, it's a decision I'm happy to make.

Of course, I also want to do a little neckline embroidery, but that shouldn't take too long if I decide to do it...

And the picture is the skirt in my lap. I love this lightweight taffeta so much :)

Help For Free:

[tumblr.com profile] steverogersandhiscyborglovers linked to a survey by the Vatican, which is asking for information about the attitudes and values of 16-29 year olds of all faiths, worldwide; it's available in Italian, English, German, Spanish, French, and Portuguese. This is the first time the Vatican has put out an online survey and it's an opportunity to share your opinions with the church (even if the demographic gathering is a little limited; they only offer "male" and "female" options for gender). You can take the survey here.

Bodice done!

The evening suffragette bodice is done!

I had to redo the eyelets on one side. They were only going through one layer of cotton. Not good. I'm glad I noticed before they all burst into one giant eyelet. It was an easy fix, just back it with a strip of cotton and redo it but a little annoying! I also put the drawstring back in, which is fine now that it just pulls it a little. Thankfully the way I redid the binding left the mechanism for it in place!

Anyway, It's time to hem the chiffon skirt. Three panels, so loads of chiffon hemming. Aiee. I really want this done (and the bodice for the beach pajamas patterned) before going to the Jane Austen Festival. I'm pretty sure that I can...

Jumping around...

I'm working on the suffragette evening dress in the least logical order. Yesterday I hemmed half the shoulder straps then the seams on the chiffon skirt, now I just cut out the taffeta underskirt. I decided to do an extra center back seam instead of an in a slit lapped placket. *shudder* And I lost my scissors for what felt like six hours, but they were under the skirt panel I was cutting. I checked it several times. Oops.

I was going to machine sew the taffeta underskirt but then realized two things. One, I'd only sew the skirt seams, not the hem. Two, this is a very lightweight taffeta and I'd probably have to adjust things on the machine. So, hand sewing it is!

The chiffon overskirt is hand sewn too because just no. Even if it selvage to selvage. And I just realized I'm going to need a center back opening in it (despite it being open in front) so that'll be just a slit.

Anyway, I think the way it's going I'm all of a sudden going to have a dress...
